Round 1, Pick 9 (San Diego Surf Dawgs): C Andre Gavlan (San Francisco High School)
Gavlan is a 17-year-old, switch hitting catcher with plus-plus power, plus contact, and no defense. The hope in San Diego would be that he could develop into a decent catcher, but if not, he would still be accepted as a middle of the lineup slugger who leads their offense. Although he didn’t play until his senior year, because his mom wouldn’t let him play such a dangerous game, in the partial season he has played in, he’s done well, showcasing that raw natural ability he possesses.
Gary Sanchez would be a good comparison to Gavlan, as they both have immense power, with good contact, but are very suspect on defense, especially at a defensive minded position. Sanchez was able to stick there, but is more suited as a DH, which could very be where Gavlan ends up.
