SAN ANTONIO, TX — Eugene Emeralds’ Triple A affiliate, San Antonio Missions won game 7 of the PCL Championship Series against Fresno Grizzlies. It was a see-saw match from game 1. Neither team won two games in a row in the championship series. Missions’ 24-year-old righty Zach Wheeler dominated the Grizzlies in game 7. Wheeler did not allow a single run, walked one, struckout 10 in 7 innings pitched. Dane Phillips started the offense in the bottom of the 3rd when he was forced to run home after a ground out by Yunel Escobar. In the 4th inning, Jeudy Valdez sent Yeison Asencio home via sac-fly to add another run for the Missions. Finally, Chris Johnson added two more runs in the 8th by hitting a two-run home run off of relief pitcher Anthony DeSclafani to give the Missions their first PCL Championship. “Pitching and defense wins championship.” Zach Wheeler said. “I think everyone did their job tonight. Pitching was fantastic, defense was flawless and we drove in runs when it counts.” Wheeler added.
