Samurai C Caryl 4-4 in Win | China Grove catcher Rob Caryl contributed to his team's 12-6 win over the Washington Generals. Caryl, who finished 3rd in the HL in wins above replacement with 6.8 last year, went 4 for 4 with 4 runs scored to lead the offensive attack for the Samurai. Steve Knauer, now 2-0, picked up the win in relief. He allowed 1 run on 2 hits in 1.2 innings. José Zavala earned the save, his 1st in 2 tries.
A defensive lapse proved costly in the contest. In the top of the sixth, with the game tied, Frank Poncherello was at the plate when China Grove scored 1 on an error. The miscue enabled the Samurai to go in front, 6-5.
"We put it together today and came out with the win," Poncherello said in postgame remarks. "That's the main thing."
With the win, China Grove raised its record to 47-39. | | | | |
