Reports out of Minneapolis broke that in span of 12 hours two trades happened, one trade involved bringing in Sonny Gray and the other shipping out Ryan Braun.  At 12:10:23 PM Orange and Millers completed a trade that sent LF Justin Upton and SP Grant Holmes to the Orange in exchange for RF Alfredo Franco, CF BJ Boyd and SP Sonny Gray.

Upton 31, batted .243, 6 HR and 14 RBI’s over 54 games with a WAR of 0.2

Holmes 23, 3.53 ERA over 16 starts with a 4-5 record. WAR of 1.9


Gray 29, 4.16 ERA over 17 starts with a 5-5 record and WAR of 1.0

Franco 30, batted .234, 2 HR and 14 RBI’s over 25 games WAR of .4

Boyd 25, batted .306,2 HR and 14 RBI’s over 39 games in AAA with a WAR of 1.5


Sources inside Millers said their goal was try to get younger in the outfield and bring in a veteran starter with experience as interest mounted for Holmes.

The second trade in a busy day for Millers came via Altoona.  Altoona sent SP Casey Kelly,SP Taylor Guerrierri ,OF Rapheal Ramirez AAA to Millers in exchange for OF/DH Ryan Braun

and RP Alex Torres


Braun 35, batted .241, 8 HR and 32 RBI’s in 314 PA with a WAR of -0.9

Torres 31, 3.36 ERA over 40 appearances with a 6-2 record and a WAR of -0.2

Guerrieri 26, 4.74 ERA over 13 starts  with a 3-4 record and a WAR of 1.6

Kelly  29, 4.99 ERA over 10 starts with a 4-4 record and a WAR of 1.1

Ramirez 23, batted .343,  0 HR and 5 RBIS in 38 PA with a WAR of 0.3


Assistant GM Anibal Gonzales stated that Braun was in last year of his contract and Braun and the organization had discussed in the past week was his future. They came to the agreement that what he was expecting in terms of length and  money was not on the Millers radar. Gonzales stated that while he hated to see Braun leave they felt they really needed to get something out of Braun before he left.

    Interesting approach, Troj! I don’t have any issues with both trades. Initially, giving up Holmes stung, but now that I know your approach, the trades you made make sense to me. Good luck to you this season and beyond! Looking forward to our series-as always!
