Ems Extend Liriano

EUGENE, OR — Eugene Emeralds made a surprising move last night in extending the struggling Francisco Liriano to a two-year deal worth $8.4 million. The 30-year old lefty made it clear few weeks ago that he is not willing to negotiate with the Emeralds. In fact, several sources have reported that Liriano was ‘good as gone’ next season. The Emeralds however, continued to pursue Liriano in spite of these reports.

“Francisco is a very talented pitcher, no question about it. Players have their down years, and we believe this season is Francisco’s down year. We expect him to help us win more games this year and for years to come.” GM Imasa said to press last night.

The contract is a ‘low-risk, high-reward’ type of contract. Many believe that  the Emeralds offered an excellent deal to Liriano. It’s a two-year deal about $4.2 million per season with team option in the 2nd year. Not to shabby for a 30-year old pitcher who’s sporting a 5.25 ERA this season. Liriano will continue to be tested this year as the team continue their push to the CBL playoffs.
