Altoona 2024 Offensive Preview

C Salvador Perez Perez has enjoyed a very solid CBL career thus far. In his first season with Altoona Perez quickly became a fan favorite. Slashing .302/.337/.477 with a 5.3 WAR. Strengths: Perez has always been able to tear the cover off the ball. He combines discipline, contact, and power making him a tough out for any CBL pitcher. weaknesses: Perez has always been a lackluster defensive catcher and with his age rising that will only become a bigger problem moving forward. Look for Altoona to give Perez plenty of resting time behind the plate. Back Up C AJ Jimenez Jimenez has an important role with this Altoona ball club. The Curve pitching staff seems to love this experience defensive catcher. He often shares his advice to many pitchers on the ball club. Strengths: Jimenez is great defe...

Altoona Curve: 2023 Offensive Preview

Altoona had a rough 2022 campaign, that’s to say the least. The team staggered to a 63-99 record and was last or second to last in every pitching catergory in the HL. Even with this dismal campaign not to far behind them members of the organization seem excited and optimistic for the 2023 campaign. The Offseason start off quite odd after Altoona fired former manager John Bonifay and hired former Vallejo manager Mike Scioscia. After a week of optimism coming from Scioscia in a surprising move he decided to retire. The team later signed former Charolotte manager Tom Prince. The team feels like Prince can help turn that dismal pitching staff around. Also noteable staff changes are Mike Butcher signing on as Pitching Coach and making Tommy Gregg the new hitting coach. With GM Justin Zima...

Things Moving Quickly In Altoona

The 2021 season for the Altoona Curve hasn’t been kind to the organization to say the least. Altoona is off to a dismal start being 29-63 on July 19th. The clubhouse has gone through some turmoil and the once loved and revered coach Gardenhire got fired after the worst start of his career. With all that in mind the optimism in the organization is truly tremendous. General Manager Justin Zima is extremely excited about the team he sees as the future of the organization. While Zima is thrilled with some CBL stars on his roster, it seems like Zima has had more intrigue in his AAA squad of the Montgomery Biscuits this season. The Biscuits are off to a fantastic start to there season sitting at 51-34 and leading the Pacific Conferance in Runs Scored, Batting Average, On Base Percentage, A...

Gallo/Miller Rivarly Hits New Heights

Late last week in a game between the Austin Bats and Altoona Curve, Joey Gallo sprinted towards a Shelby Miller occupied mound. If one didn’t know any better they would have thought they were watching a boxing match. These two CBL heavy weights have been brewing this rivalry for a long time and finally it erupted into a brawl that got the two of them suspended for 10 games.   April 26th 2018   This day will forever be looked at as the start of it all… Joey Gallo had been having a great month as well as Shelby Miller. They both had big heads at the time. Gallo hit a 2-2 curveball a long way and just sort of stared at it, the ball hooked foul and Shelby Miller didn’t seem to appreciate the sportsmanship. The next pitch was a 2-2 fastball up in the zone that struck...

Fresh off Altoona Curve’s young 23 year old First Basemen’s Cycle on May 27th against Mahooning Valley we sat down with Kurt Olson and discussed what he thinks has contributed to his recent CBL success and what his hopes are for his future with the organization. Kurt Olson in 21 games and 93 at bats has posted a .333/.364/.645 slash line while swiping 7 bags. We sat down with Olson to talk about what he believes his keys to success are. “I’m seeing the ball well and doing everything I can to produce for Altoona. Getting on base and seeing pitches is important for a lead off man and I take that role very seriously. I’ve always been a gap to gap hitter and I’ve been doing a great job at letting the ball travel through the zone and hitting it where it’...

Altoona Curve Player Spotlight: Lewis Thorpe

In the wake of Lewis Thorpe’s first start for his new team the Altoona Curve, we sat down with the 24 year old Australian lefty to discuss his hopes for the season and his personal goals moving forward We asked Thorpe about his thoughts on joining the rotation in Altoona. “It’s an honor, I didn’t have too many innings out of the bullpen but manager Ron Gardenhire sat me down and told me he liked what he saw, he said if I can keep controlling my fastball and keep the ball in the ballpark I could have a great future with this ball club. When someone who’s been around the game as long as he has tells you he sees potential in you its kind of surreal, it really makes you reflect on how you’ve gotten to this point in your Career.” As our conversation wit...

Altoona Curve Player Spotlight: Jimmy Small

Altoona Curve top prospect Jimmy Small has certainly been making a name for himself in the organization that acquired him this offseason. Jimmy Small was recently ranked the 5th highest prospect in the CBL and for good reason. The 21 year old former third basemen now turned first basemen, has been tearing the cover off the ball lately. In the winter league this year Small slashed 388/498/688 with 13 Hrs and 41 RBI. It’s obvious the Altoona organization ¬†sees something they like in Jimmy Small as he played often in Spring training sitting in the middle of there order. Altoona GM talked with us about Small this afternoon. “That kid isn’t only extremely powerful but he’s extremely intelligent. He’s a young guy who’s never done studying the game and the comp...

Altoona Curve 2020 Pitching Preview

As promised here’s the 2020 pitching preview for the Altoona Curve! SP-Chris Sale- Sale is a guy the organization is very Ethusiastic about! Zima was quoted saying “why have people given up on this guy?!? He can lead our staff and lead our young pitchers towards success!” There’s question marks around the league if he’ll ever return to his form in San Diego but one things for sure, he will pitch well, it’s just a matter of how well. SP-Wily Peralta- Peralta much like Sale is a guy who will show success but also teach the young pitchers around him. Zima said “leading by example is key for our young guys! You show them the right habits and that’ll stick with them throughout their whole career, Peralta will certainly lead by example.” Thes...

Altoona Curve 2020 Offensive Preview

As the offseason comes rolling to an end, it’s the time of year we examine and preview the Altoona Curve roster… We’ll break down every player and their expectations for the season ahead! Catcher- Buster Posey- Last Season Posey batted a respectable 253/316/389 with 16 HRs and 82 RBIs. We expect posey to continue producing in Altoona this season, we know general manager Zima was excited about his leadership and defense behind the plate and we agree that posey should help this young Altoona staff. We’ll see if Posey’s age will catch up to him or not but we exp ft a pretty good season out of Buster Posey. Catcher/DH-Santiago Nessy- Nessy hasn’t produced at a major league level in his career yet. We like his power potential but he is a true question mark on...
