Johnny AllstaffRound 1, Pick 10 (Altoona Curve): SP Johnny Allstaff (Cathedral Catholic High School)

A rotation that will be headlined by young fireballers Jerry Chandler and Juan Viera needs a different mix in there. Insert a 17-year-old left handed pitcher who tops at 90, although that will increase, and relies on a sinker/slider/changeup combo and good control. This is the perfect pick for Altoona, whose scout has said “Allstaff has the highest ceiling of any pitcher in this draft”.

A younger version of Jaime Garcia would be a good comparison, neither is overpowering but has elite command and can use any pitch to get a batter out. To get such a high potential pitcher this late in the first round definitely helps the young Curve in their quick rebuild process.

Sinker: 60 | Slider: 60 | Changeup: 75 | Control: 70 | Overall: 65

Nice write-up. You are right, that’s the kind of player I’d target. 🙂

If Wolfe went to Tucson like you predicted then I would have ended picking Bo Allen. I felt as though they are very similar pitchers but Wolfe has more potential upside…Anyways excellent article!
